Its all Latin to me!!!

The mother of all Western languages, Latin is now no longer spoken, written or used daily. But that does not mean that it is extinct. Many fields use Latin phrases so often that they seem English now.

But, Latin is such an interesting and cool language, and speaking Latin makes you seem nerdy-cool!

Latin is an inherently difficult language to learn (as are most languages). But here's a cheat sheet of some phrases you can use to sound super-smart. And I don't mean phrases like Carpe diem or Veni, vidi, vici.

Let's delve into some of the more...errrr, not so common...phrases in Latin.

Venite incipere!

(Let us begin!)

1. Cogito ergo sum

"I think, therefore I am".

This comes from the great philosopher Rene Descartes' writing. And what a philosophical way to start this list of phrases!

2. Ad astra per aspera

"Through adversity to the stars".

How much nicer and poetic is this way of saying that we have overcome the obstacles and emerged victorious?

3. Acta non verba

"Deeds not words".

The English version of this "Actions speak louder than words" is commonly heard, but how much more commanding is this in Latin?

4. Audentes fortuna iuvat

"Fortune favours the bold".

And it takes a bold person to actually pronounce the words right in this saying...and I mean all of us can quote this, albeit with a little bit of practice.

5. Nil desperandum

"Never despair".

Yet again, how beautiful does such a trite saying sound in Latin. It immediately perks you up!

6. Amor vincit omnia

"Love conquers all".

Be it in English or Latin or any other language, the truth of this saying is something none can object to. Latin just adds a touch more romance to it...

7. Vivamus, moriendum est

"Let us live, since we must die".

What a mouthful in English, and what a boring old sentence. Yet the Latin version reads like an amazing proverb that we would hasten to follow.

8. Condemnant quo non intellegunt

"They condemn that which they don't understand".

This is the phrase to whip out and use when people stare at you for using those other phrases on this list.

Let's have some fun with the last 2 phrases shall we???

9. Omnia dicta fortiora si dicta Latina

"Everything is stronger if said in Latin".

True indeed! The use of Latin packs a punch unlike any other and makes people sit up and take note.

10. Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes

"If you can read this you're over-educated".

Pretty self-explanatory...And true!

Quid vobis videtur

(What do you think)?

Which of these phrases speaks to you? Which one would you love adding to your everyday lingo? Personally, I have always and will always love #10...

Occidens et orientis, Latina est optimus!

(East or West, Latin is the best).
